After treatment for skin cancer it is important to return to your plastic surgeon and dermatologist for regular follow-up to make sure that the cancer hasn’t recurred and for long-term scar management. Prevention of skin cancer is obviously our most valuable weapon. Because of the integral role of ultraviolet exposure in the cause of skin cancer you should:

  • Avoid exposure to sun, especially between 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM and during the summer months. Remember water, snow and sand reflect UV rays and increase exposure.

  • When outdoors wear protective clothing such as wide brimmed hats and long sleeves.

  • Use an FDA approved sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 on any exposed areas. Some sunscreens in addition to protecting from UVB rays, which are associated with sunburn and skin cancer, protect against UVA which are associated with photoaging.

  • Re-apply sunscreen regularly especially after you’ve been swimming or sweating and use sunscreen even on cloudy days.

  • Examine your skin regularly and do so with the assistance of a dermatologist. If you note anything suspicious consult a dermatologist, plastic surgeon or other qualified physician immediately.
